Digimon: The Movies Text Review
I'm rewatching the original three Digimon movies, as they got redubbed by Discotek last year, using the old cast and the dub names for nostalgia purposes.
I will say that Udi Harpaz's score from the fox kids dub (That being the dub that fused the movies together because Fox were cowards) is more to my liking, but that's cause I like the 90s Spider-Man cartoon. I'm not a fan of the classical music being used in the original Japanese score by Takanori Arisawa, despite how well they fit in the films. Unlike most shitty pussy ass dub scores, Udi Harpaz's dub score features a full orchestra. It feels like one too (Ed Goldfarb's Pokemon Dub score doesn't count).
The re-dubbed localization is a lot better than the original dub, as the Digi-Dubbers weren't forced to fuse three movies into one, so they have time to make this dub as good as possible script wise.
The worst part about the Fox Kids dub is that the style change in the third movie disorients me so hard that I get a headache. The first two films were directed by Mamoru Hosoda, the director of Summer Wars, Belle, and the girl who leapt through time, while the third (which is a full fucking movie) was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, who directed every DBZ Broly film and Fusion Reborn.
The DOUBLY worst part about the Fox Kids Dub is all that licensed music. Like--ALL STAR?! BY SMASH MOUTH?! WHAT THE HELL! Also One Week. My favorite licensed song from the film was "All my Best Friends are Metalheads" By Less Than Jake (Minus Kel Mitchell), cause it comes the closest to fitting the vibe of Digimon. It fails miserably, but it does come close.
The licensed music really was the worst part for me. Like--imagine if you're watching Lupin III and fuckin--Wu-Tang Clan show up in the background. If you're gonna used licensed music, DO IT RIGHT!
The RZA did for Afro Samurai...
Anyway, The surviving actors of the original dub of Digimon come back to do the voices here. While it does take time for Joshua Seth and Michael Reisz to fully adjust back to their roles as Tai Kamiya and Matt Ishida, everyone else sounds as if they never left at all. Especially in the case of Mona Marshall as Izzy and Lara Jill Miller as Kari. It really does sound like they've been doing the voices all their careers. Most of the actors did come back for Digimon Adventure Tri., but still.
I think that Discotek should do more redubs than they're doing, cause if they're this good, imagine if they redub Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy with the real English cast? They already did Legend of the Gold of Babylon and Part 1, so why not?
I'm gonna do spoiler heavy reviews of each of the films soon, so stay tuned...or be warned if you wanna get into the series cause...spoilers.
